History of the farm and home as told by
Barbara
All
buildings on the property except the large metal shed were built by Barbara Ostermyer's maternal grandparents, Frank and Helen Thomas.
The house was built in
1922 by WC Anderson & Sons for $10,000. The lumber was brought to the
farm when the oldest sons went to school. They would
drop off the team and wagon to be loaded and bring it home that evening.
There were twelve
carpenters building the home for three months. They would come to the farm
on Monday morning and stay there until Saturday evening. Grandma would
provide them meals.
The Thomas family
butchered their own meat. Grandpa kept track of how much meat and what year with
chalk on the wall in the basement near the water heater. (These markings are
still visible today).
The home still has the
original woodwork, pocket doors, and plaster in good condition. When the home was built,
it had two bathrooms with running water and electric lights. This was very
unusual for the time. This is proof that no expense was spared on this home
during construction. The lighting
system was run by a 32 volt battery system in the basement, as R.E.C. didn't
even
come to the area until 1947.
